SHENZHEN Technology University (SZTU) established a consortium agreement with Bavarian Universities of Applied Sciences (BUAS) at a ceremony Friday in Shenzhen.

The purpose of the agreement is to stimulate and support joint research and study, intercultural activities and projects among students, faculty and higher education management between SZTU and five BUAS universities.

Prior to the agreement-signing ceremony, Vice Mayor Wang Lixin, at a meeting with university representatives from BUAS, said SZTU and BAUS had developed deep cooperation in student and faculty exchanges, the joint establishment of laboratories and discipline setup. Wang hopes the two sides will develop new modes of talent cultivation and expand the global influence of SZTU.

According to the agreement, the consortium has six member universities and will hold an annual meeting on cooperation and project development. BUAS will support SZTU in setting up a liaison office at Regensburg at an appropriate time. The member universities will jointly organize international forums and conferences.

The signing event to form the consortium was a highlight of last week’s International Culture Week of Shenzhen Technology University.

Ruan Shuangchen, president of SZTU, said the alignment with five German universities will create a win-win situation through the sharing of each member’s resources, information and advantages.

“This is an important step for SZTU to further enhance cooperation with BAUS for future cooperation such as joint student cultivation, construction of an internship base and laying the foundation for deeper cooperation in research and the transformation of scientific research results into products,” said Ruan at the signing ceremony.

“We are very happy to have an alliance with SZTU because it does things the same way as we do. We can exchange students easily, show German students how Chinese companies are working, and invite Chinese students to Germany to see how German companies are working. It is beneficial for both sides,” said Dr. Robert Grebner, president of University of Applied Sciences Wurzburg-Schweinfurt.

Germany has advantages in the applied sciences. In Germany, one-third of all college students study the applied sciences and two-thirds of all engineers study at universities of applied sciences.

Grebner expects SZTU will produce a lot of students who are immediately ready to apply their engineering knowledge in jobs.

Shenzhen Technology University was established in 2015 and began recruiting students in 2016. The establishment of SZTU represented Shenzhen’s determination to enhance its brand as an innovation and entrepreneurship hub, and cultivate talents who can meet the demand of the city’s industrial development. In three years, the university has established partnerships with 35 applied sciences universities and developed cooperation involving student exchanges, teacher introduction and laboratory and test center construction

The university introduced the model of the applied sciences universities in Germany and set up courses to meet the demand of the pillar industries, strategic emerging industries and future industries in Shenzhen.

The university now has six colleges, including the Sino-German College of Intelligence and Manufacturing, College of Big Data and Internet, College of New Materials and New Energy, College of Urban Transportation and Logistics, College of Health Science and Environmental Engineering and College of Creative Design.

A total of 1,030 students are currently studying at the university.
