Lamb twins

A PAIR of twin lambs born from embryos frozen 20 years ago made their debut at an ongoing agriculture fair in Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang Province.

The baby twins were born in September from two of the 120 local sheep embryos scientists had collected and kept in -196 degree Celsius liquid nitrogen at a national gene bank for livestock since 1988.

Local scientists put the embryos into the womb of a female sheep in April, expecting to breed the local variety that has seen a drop in quality due to increased hybridization in recent years.

2 killed, 57 injured

TWO people were killed and 57 injured in a warehouse explosion in Northeast China’s Jilin Province on Friday night, according to the latest updates.

The accident occurred at around 11:40 p.m. Friday in a warehouse of Jiangcheng Machinery Company in Sanhe Township, Dongfeng County, leaving two people dead, including one who died in hospital. The 57 injured are receiving treatment, with one person suffering serious injuries.

Infectious disease deaths

A TOTAL of 2,138 people died as a result of infectious diseases in China in October, official data showed.

The Health News quoted the National Health Commission as saying earlier this week that there were 604,282 cases of infectious diseases reported on the mainland last month.

One case of cholera was reported in November and no cases of plague were reported. No fatalities caused by these diseases have been reported, the newspaper report said.
