Environmental cases

THE Supreme People’s Court (SPC) has unveiled details of 10 typical cases involving environmental pollution offenses in the development of the Yangtze River economic belt, a move it said would provide guidance to courts handling such cases.

Defendants listed in the cases had carried out unlawful activities that contributed to environmental degradation of the air, water, soil, and natural resources, said the SPC when unveiling the cases.

Bodies identified

ALL 23 people killed in the combustible and toxic gas-triggered blasts in North China’s Hebei Province have been identified after DNA tests, local authorities said yesterday.

The victims are from 20 different households which previously registered their family members as missing after the accident, according to the city information office of Zhangjiakou.

An investigation showed that the vinyl chloride leaked from the gas holder at Hebei Shenghua Chemical Industry Co. Ltd. and spread to a nearby road, causing the blasts at around 12:40 a.m. last Wednesday.

12 trapped

TWELVE people trapped by strong gales on a national highway in Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have been moved to safety after seven hours of rescue efforts.

Strong winds of up to 30 meters per second hit the city of Karamay and its surrounding areas Friday night. After receiving the call for help, local police sent 24 rescuers and six vehicles to search for those trapped on National Highway No.217 in the early hours of Saturday.

Fog alert

THE national observatory yesterday renewed a yellow alert for thick fog in some northern and eastern regions.

Thick fog affected Beijing, as well as Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces yesterday morning, reducing visibility in some areas to less than 200 meters, the National Meteorological Center said.
