New kind of telecom scam emerges
    2018-12-06  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A WOMAN surnamed Peng recently received a phone call from a telecom scam suspect who claimed to be a policeman. Peng was told that her personal information had been leaked and was being used by fraudsters to launder money.

In order to win Peng’s trust, the scammer even invented a touching story. However, the police discovered the telecom scam in time to stop Peng from transferring money to the scammer, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

The scammer told Peng that fraudsters had been using her bank account to launder money and that a mother of a 5-year-old child committed suicide after they cheated her out of all of her savings, leaving behind the poor child.

The scammer said the case was urgent and required Peng’s full cooperation in the investigation. Peng was touched by the sad story and agreed.

At this time, the Shangnan Police Station in Bao’an District received a fraud warning from the Shenzhen Anti-fraud Center and was instructed to quickly stop the scam.

The police officers found Peng at her workplace just as she was convinced of the story and was preparing to transfer 8,500 yuan (US$1,238) to the scammer’s account.

The police eventually convinced Peng it was a telecom scam.
