AN accident that killed a rider in a fall from a footbridge Tuesday has once again raised public concern over app-based bikes and criticism over their poor maintenance.

A video provided yesterday by police shows the bike rider falling from the bridge after his bike hits the fence on the footbridge on Buxin Road in Dongxiao Subdistrict, Luohu District, on Tuesday at noon.

The man, who was later identified by the surnamed Shu, scanned the QR code and began to use the shared bike, but when he reached the other end of the footbridge, the bike hit the fence, vaulting the rider over the railing and down to the ground at Dongxiao Housing Estate.

Police conducted a technical appraisal of the bike showing that the brakes were faulty.

Police launched an investigation into the duties of the bike operator in following safety rules.

Poor maintenance, leading to the rise of dysfunctional bikes and subsequent poor riding experiences, has been a major factor in lowering the overall performance of app-based bike operators.

In the latest assessment of the performance of bike operators in the third quarter, Shenzhen’s transport commission urged the operators to enhance bike and user management.

The evaluation judges operators according to five aspects, namely the condition of the bikes, daily management, implementation of rules, public satisfaction and the results of inspections.

The results showed Mobike and ofo bikes ranked first and second, with scores of 66.19 and 53.53, respectively. The other three bike operators each received less than 30 points.

The bike operators with the lowest marks for daily management and public satisfaction received an average of 32 points and 34 points, respectively, according to the results.
