CANADIAN COURT GRANTS BAIL TO HUAWEI CFO
    2018-12-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A CANADIAN judge ruled Tuesday that Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of China’s Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., who was detained by Canadian authorities at the request of U.S. authorities, can be released on bail.

The Supreme Court of British Columbia said Meng, a well-educated businesswoman with letters of reference, does not pose a flight risk.

Meng denied any charges from the United States during the hearing.

Justice William Ehrcke at the court hearing granted bail to Meng, on condition of a 10-million-Canadian-dollar (US$7.5 million) financial pledge and five guarantors, according to reports.

Meng must remain in Canada and be subject to surveillance by a combination of security guards and technology, including a GPS ankle bracelet and 24-hour security detail, when she leaves her Vancouver residence. She has also surrendered her passport.

Her lawyer, David Martin, said  She had also cited health reasons for requesting bail.

During a pause in proceedings, Martin said Meng looked forward to spending time with family, reading novels and maybe applying to a doctorate program while the extradition case plays out.

“The Canadian authorities have agreed to release our CFO,” Huawei said in an official statement yesterday. “We have every confidence that the Canadian and U.S. legal systems will reach a just conclusion in the following proceedings. We look forward to a timely resolution of this matter.”

“Our request is very clear: Canada should correct this wrong practice and release Meng Wanzhou immediately,” said Lu Kang, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, at a daily briefing yesterday.

Meng was taken into custody in Vancouver on Dec. 1 at the request of the U.S. Government, while traveling from Hong Kong to Mexico via Canada.

The move was part of a U.S. investigation into an alleged scheme to use the global banking system to evade U.S. sanctions against Iran. However, the United States has not yet provided any evidence to prove the allegations.

Canada’s detention of Meng earlier this month has sparked worldwide attention and drew strong criticism from China.

China has previously lodged solemn representations with the Canadian and the U.S. sides, urging the two countries to clarify the reason for Meng’s detainment, immediately release her and effectively protect her legitimate rights and interests.

Meng is due back in court Feb. 6, 2019.(SD-Xinhua)
