Free exhibition, lecture by illustrator Jimmy Liao
    2018-12-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

“All of My World Is You,” an exhibition reviewing Taiwanese illustrator Jimmy Liao’s 20-year career, is being held at the newly opened Eslite Spectrum Shenzhen in MixC World. Entry is free.

Better known as Jimmy, the featured artist will also give a lecture Dec. 22 at the store, which is a six-floor mall of eating and selling cultural, artistic and lifestyle products. Booking for the lecture is now full but readers can still try their luck at getting standby seats before the lecture begins. Jimmy will also sign autographs after the lecture.

Majoring in art, Jimmy worked in an advertising company for 12 years and then worked as an illustrator for newspapers and magazines. After surviving a battle with leukemia in 1995, he became determined to devote himself to art. In 1998, his picture books “Secrets in the Forest” and “A Fish With a Smile” were published in Taiwan. These two books earned him several book awards and were regarded as the best children’s books in several Taiwanese newspapers.

His picture book “A Chance of Sunshine” or “Turn Left, Turn Right,” which was published in 1999, was voted “One of the 10 Most Influential Books” by bookstore chain Kingstones. Jimmy’s books have been translated into dozens of languages and sold around the world. His books have also been adapted for theater, movie, television and animation. Many of his characters from his picture books have been applied to the making of dolls and pictures on other authorized products, notably leather purses. His pictures are characterized by their use of warm colors and depict central figures that often appear small in the foreground, suggesting the viewpoint of a child in the wide, sometimes sinister world, or hinting at loneliness.

Exhibition: Until Feb. 24, 2019

Lecture: 2-4 p.m., Dec. 22

Venue: Eslite Spectrum Shenzhen, MixC World, Tonggu Road, Nanshan District (南山区铜鼓路深圳万象天地诚品生活深圳)

Metro: Line 1 to Hi-tech Park Station (高新站), Exit A
