Chalamet Tapped for Spotlight Award

TIMOTHEE CHALAMET, the “Call Me by Your Name” Oscar nominee who is now generating best supporting actor Oscar buzz for his performance in Felix Van Groeningen’s “Beautiful Boy,” has been chosen to receive the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Spotlight Award, Actor at the event’s annual awards gala Jan. 3, 2019.

Previous recipients of the honor include Bryan Cranston, Andrew Garfield, Sam Rockwell and J.K. Simmons.

“Timothee Chalamet gives a heartwarming but tragic performance as a young man struggling with drug addiction in the film ‘Beautiful Boy,’” fest chair Harold Matzner said Wednesday in a statement. “Last year, Timothee was the recipient of the festival’s Rising Star Award for his role in ‘Call Me by Your Name.’ He is definitely a rising star. It is our honor to present the Spotlight Award, Actor to him.”

PSIFF previously announced several other honors to be presented at its awards gala: Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) will receive the Career Achievement Award; Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) will receive the Chairman’s Award; Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born”) will receive the Director of the Year Award; Glenn Close (“The Wife”) will receive the Icon Award; Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) will receive the Breakthrough Performance Award; Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress; Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) will receive the Spotlight Award; Alfonso Cuaron (“Roma”) will receive the Sonny Bono Visionary Award; and co-writer/director Peter Farrelly and stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali of “Green Book” will receive the Vanguard Award.
