City to further reduce traffic accidents
    2018-12-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN is expected to be the first of the big and mid-sized cities in China to bring the ratio of accident fatalities below 1 for every 10,000 vehicles, according to a news conference Monday.

The city reported a total of 1,683 traffic accidents resulting in 277 deaths, and 937 injuries, between Jan. 1 and Dec. 21, a decrease of 14.35 percent, 17.31 percent and 21.39 percent in total number, fatalities and injuries, respectively.

The big drop in fatalities will enable the fatality rate from traffic accidents to fall to a ratio of 0.9 deaths for every 10,000 vehicles, indicating the city’s road traffic management has matched the level of the world’s advanced cities.

The risks of driving on expressways have increased, and fatigued driving at night has become a major reason for accidents in the city.

In December, the city reported two accidents Dec. 13 and 21 that killed three people and injured two others. The two accidents both happened during the wee hours, and fatigued driving was the main cause.

Despite the drop in fatal accidents, fatalities related to e-bikes increased by 19.7 percent to 109 deaths this year. Driving on motorist lanes, violating traffic rules and not wearing helmets were the leading factors in e-bike accidents resulting in fatalities.

Police will conduct a 100-day action until Feb. 4, the eve of the 2019 Spring Festival, to ensure road safety by eliminating unqualified vehicles from the road. (Han Ximin)
