Aeon upgrades Shenzhen store in retail push

JAPANESE retailer Aeon has remodeled one of its outlets in Shenzhen into a lifestyle community department store in a push for further expansion in the South China retail market, incorporating new features to adapt to changing consumption habits.

The oldest Aeon outlet in Shenzhen, the Donghu outlet has become the first Aeon Style store on the Chinese mainland, after the two-story shop re-opened Sunday following a renovation.

“We have strong confidence in the South China retail market, considering the population and spending power here,” Inohara Hiroyuki, managing director of Aeon’s South China division, told reporters after the opening ceremony. “We plan to quicken our steps in opening stores in South China, with four to five new stores annually.”

By 2020, the number of Aeon stores in South China will reach 40, according to Hiroyuki, since there are already 31. Most of the new stores will be in cities like Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Foshan, he said.

To embrace the new retail tide in China, the newly opened Aeon Style integrates as many digital features as possible into the brick-and-mortar store, including electronic kiosks for consumers to shop online from Japan, or even just for interaction or recreation.

Nearly one-fourth of the store area is devoted to maternal and child products and a spacious play area has been set up for kids.

“A large proportion of our target customers are families with kids, and we had found through surveys that this was true of the customers at the Donghu store,” said Fukada Minoru, deputy managing director of Aeon South China.

The retailer hopes to open more Aeon Style stores in South China by either building new ones or refurnishing old stores. There are 66 Aeon Style outlets in Japan and two in Hong Kong, he said.

Bringing in more Japan-made products, including food, clothing and cosmetics, is another feature of Aeon Style, according to Xiao Qiuping, manager of the Donghu store. The Cantevole bakery at the Donghu Aeon Style is also the first on the Chinese mainland, Xiao said.(SD-Agencies)
