Man detained for disclosing personal information
    2019-01-11  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A HOTEL manager in Shenzhen has been put under administrative detention by Longhua police for seven days and fined 500 yuan (US$73.61) for having posted a client’s personal information online, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

The client, surnamed Wu, exposed the unhygienic practices of 14 luxury hotels on China’s twitter-like Weibo last November, which quickly triggered a fevered debate among netizens. Wu is an online celebrity on the social media platform.

Subsequently, Wu claimed that his passport information had been posted in the WeChat groups or office spaces of seven high-end hotels. The staff at the hotels were warned to remain on guard around him and made personal attacks about him.

On Dec. 30, 2018, Wu said on Weibo that he had reported the case to the Shenzhen police and accused the general manager of Ramada Plaza Shenzhen of posting his personal information and fabricating rumors on the Internet.

According to Wu, the hotel manager, surnamed Peng, was the first person he knew of that had divulged his personal information.

On Jan. 6, Wu posted on Weibo that he had been to the Minzhi Police Station in Longhua District and met Peng face to face under the mediation of the police. However, no settlement was reached between the two sides.

The Longhua police subsequently launched an investigation. Peng later pleaded guilty to posting Wu’s personal information. (Zhang Yu)
