Authorities to tighten checks on dump trucks
    2019-01-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

LOCAL authorities will tighten checks to curb dump truck violations and the operation of unlicensed dump trucks, local Chinese-language media reported yesterday.

Besides overloading, speeding and going against restrictions, some dump truck operators also illegally hire unlicensed or illegally refitted dump trucks for their business operation, according to Lu Jinhai, director with Shenzhen Dump Truck Rectification Office.

At a meeting with 200 representatives from local dump truck companies, the city’s police authority said overloading and speeding are still the major problems with dump trucks, and the refitted trucks could easily cause traffic accidents. The authorities required dump truck operators to register their new electricity-powered dump trucks before the end of March. The new trucks will be put into operation in May after passing relevant reviews and checks by authorities.

The meeting was held in response to two recent fatal accidents related to dump trucks in Bao’an District. Three people died in the two accidents, the latest casualties in the city caused by dump trucks.

On the morning of Jan. 9, a dump truck collided with a bike rider surnamed Huang on a road in Caowei Village, Hangcheng Subdistrict, Bao’an.

On the night of Jan. 10, another dump truck collided with an e-bike as the two vehicles were turning onto Fuyong Boulevard. The two people on the e-bike, a father and son, were killed.

In 2018, dump truck-related accidents killed 31 people, five more than in 2017, or an increase of 19 percent. This is in stark contrast to the number of traffic accident fatalities, which dropped by 17.6 percent in 2018.
