A: Have you noticed? The new lifeguard at the pool of the gym near our office building is very handsome. B: He is a good lifeguard too. He saved an elderly man last week. After noticing the grandpa was in danger of drowning, he leapt into the water and was quick on the draw to help the poor man. Note: This expression evokes the image of a man quickly reaching down and drawing his gun from its holster, readying it to fire at anyone he chooses. The American idiom had always been associated with guns and shootings, until around the 1930s, when it was used in the sense of “very fast.” It perhaps gained popularity from the Quick Draw Mcgraw cartoon that first premiered in 1959. |
