Metro exit closure

EXIT E at the Shenzhen Civic Center Station of Shenzhen Metro will be closed from Thursday to Jan. 20 and from Jan. 28 to Feb. 5 due to the demands of major activities at Shenzhen Civic Center, sources from the Metro company said. The other exits except for A will be closed between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Jan. 19 and from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Feb. 4.

Cab co-drivers

OF the 16 fatal accidents involving cabs in 2018, 15 involved shift drivers, indicating negligence in management by cab operators, police said.

The shift drivers are generally hired by cab drivers and don’t have much experience in driving. The qualification requirements for shift drivers of traditional cabs had been lowered due to the drain of drivers leaving to work for app-based cab operators.

The city has 75 cab companies operating 21,077 cabs.

Anti-smuggling

THE anti-smuggling department of Shenzhen Customs has handled about 7,000 smuggling cases involving 70 billion yuan (US$10.29 billion) over 20 years, it was announced at a ceremony marking its anniversary. The department has filed 120,000 smuggling cases involving 9.3 billion yuan.

Glass removed

DOCTORS at Bao’an District Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital removed a 1-centimeter long glass shard from the left lower eyelid of a woman in a recent operation.

The woman, surnamed Zeng, went to see a doctor about pain in her left eye. An ultrasound examination found a suspicious object in Zeng’s eye, and doctors immediately performed the surgery. Zeng said she hurt her eyes at 7 years old when a light bulb burst in front of her. The doctors who dealt with her wound failed to remove the piece of glass.
