Navigation passage to be expanded in western port
    2019-01-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE city’s port administration will expand the navigation passage in the western port area to allow a 200,000-ton container ship and a 100,000-ton container ship to meet and pass in opposite directions, local Chinese-language media reported yesterday.

The expansion project, part of Phase II of the Shenzhen western port area, will expand the existing Tonggu Passage, whose vessel accommodating capacity does not currently meet the cargo throughput demand, which has been driven up by the stable and fast growth of the city’s economy, the administration said.

According to the plan released by the project administration, the passage is 25.7 kilometers in length, including the 17-km Tonggu Passage. The width is 470 meters and the standard depth is 17.5 meters under the sea. The 8.7-km expansion of the passage will link to the Dahao Navigation Passage. It is 435 meters wide and 17 meters deep. The expansion of the passage will increase its accommodating capacity and offer high-quality service to vessels coming to and leaving the city’s port area.

The port administration is seeking public suggestions over the environmental impact of the project, and the public can send suggestions to zxjszx@sztb.gov.cn and the mail box of the Shenzhen Municipal Transport Public Facility Construction Center in the coming 60 days.

In 2018, the throughput of Shenzhen ports reached 25.74 million TEUs (twenty-foot-equivalent units), up 2 percent over the previous year. The throughput of Yantian Port in the east reached 14.39 million TEUs, up 2.58 percent from the previous year. The throughput of the western port reached 10.2 million TEUs in 2018.
