60 suspects arrested for online dating scams
    2019-01-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SIXTY suspects of telecom scams were escorted back to Shenzhen on Sunday night, sznews.com reported yesterday, citing the Guangming police.

The suspects have been arrested in Foshan City and Hebei Province with the help from local police there, Alibaba and Tencent. They allegedly defrauded victims out of hundreds of thousands of yuan through online dating scams, the Guangming police said.

In October 2018, a Guangming District resident identified by his family name Gao reported to the police that he had suddenly lost contact with his girlfriend whom he met online. According to Gao, this so-called girlfriend had asked him for a total of nearly 10,000 yuan (US$1,481) on online social platforms after they established a romantic relationship.

The Guangming police immediately set up a special task force after receiving similar reports from other residents. Following the investigation, the police targeted an online fraud gang based in Gaobeidian City in Hebei Province.

The gang members were suspected of conducting a pyramid scheme by disguising themselves as employees of a cosmetics company to recruit new members, a police investigation found.

According to the police, relatives and friends of the gang members were usually their first targets as they would be less suspicious. The suspects invited their relatives and friends to join the group and pay the membership fees.

They would then provide the new members with training on online socializing and counter investigation skills. They would brainwash the new members into thinking they would make a fortune by following their instructions, police said.

The new members were also promised high rewards for developing new members and their relatives and friends became new targets. The new members would follow their instructions to conduct online dating scams on different social platforms. The gang members used a voice processing technology to disguise their voice as a male or a female according to the gender of their victims.

After confirming the information, the Guangming police immediately went to Foshan City and Gaobeidian City to arrest the suspects.

Police remind residents to be cautious when making friends online, especially when money is involved and around the turn of the Spring Festival season.
