Illegal structures at luxury estate being torn down
    2019-01-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

ILLEGAL structures built by homeowners in Shuangxi Garden (Phase II), an expensive housing estate in Shekou, Nanshan District, are being demolished by law enforcement officers, Shenzhen TV reported.

Previously, it was reported by the broadcaster that the homeowners and developers of the housing estate had avoided or even resisted law enforcement by refusing to open their doors.

The reporter from the TV broadcaster found a decorated but unoccupied apartment during a field visit to the housing estate. The floor area of the apartment is more than 200 square meters. However, a structure of about 8 square meters, which is equivalent to a small room, had been secretly built in a vacant shaft.

According to the law enforcement officers, 17 apartments in buildings A and B of the housing estate, which are of the same layout, were found to contain illegal structures.

The law enforcement department successfully demolished the illegal structure in one apartment Jan. 17, and six other structures had been demolished by Tuesday. The demolition work is still progressing, according to the news report.

It was also found that the illegal structures were mainly built by simply inserting rebar into the surrounding walls without adding structural support, which created safety hazards.

Additionally, as the walls of the structures are lined with natural gas pipelines, water pipes and sewage pipes, and both the upstairs and downstairs households have added such structures, removing the illegal structures is quite difficult, according to the demolition team.

The law enforcement team said that the demolition is currently being conducted by the law enforcement team instead of the homeowners. The team will recover the cost of the demolition from these homeowners through judicial means in the future.

The housing estate’s property management staff said they will find ways to allow the homeowners to make repairs at their own expense to restore the original appearance of the walls.
