Work to start on high-speed rail to Jiangmen
    2019-01-30  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

WORK on the 116-km high-speed rail between Shenzhen and Jiangmen will start this year. The 41.6-billion-yuan (US$6.12 billion) project is expected to be finished by 2024, according to a draft plan that was handed out for lawmakers to review at the Second Session of 13th Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress, Chinese-language newspapers reported.

According to the plan, the province will invest 100 million yuan in rail base and bridge construction in 2019.

After the project is completed, residents will be able to reach cities in western Guangdong by high-speed train. The Jiangmen-Maoming high-speed rail was put into operation in June 2018 and is connected with the Maoming-Zhanjiang rail, Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Rail and Guangzhou-Shenzhen High-Speed Rail. A single trip from Shenzhen to Zhanjiang will be cut to 3.5 hours after the Shenzhen-Jiangmen rail is completed. At present, there is only one train from Shenzhen to Zhanjiang a day, and travelers have to transfer at Guangzhou South Railway Station.

According to the plan, the intercity rail between Guangzhou and Dongguan and its extension to the Shenzhen airport will be completed within the year. Residents in Guangzhou and Dongguan will be able to get to the Shenzhen airport by rail in one hour.

The expressway and high-speed rail projects linking Shenzhen and Shanwei are also listed in the provincial investment plan. The province will invest 40 billion yuan to renovate and build a 78-kilometer expressway linking downtown Shenzhen and Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone in Shanwei City. The 126-kilometer Shenzhen-Shanwei high-speed rail will cost 38 billion yuan.

Guangdong plans to invest 650 billion yuan in 1,000 major projects this year. (Richard Han)
