Event helps boost child-parent bonding
    2019-02-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Most Chinese parents are facing such immense homework-related stress that they often take it out on their children, which can lead to worsened child-parent relationships.

In order to reconnect and mend the relationship between parents and their left-behind children, the KFC Xinyuan outlet in Luohu District organized an event themed “My New ‘Deskmate’” on January 30 and invited educators and psychologists to share tips with parents for tutoring their children on homework.

During the event, parents were given a new role: the deskmates of their children. They shared one desk and one book while listening to teachers telling stories.

They broke the ice by tying red scarves for each other and shaking hands with each other. Then parents were required to finish their “homework” which was assigned by their children. The homework included questions like “Do you still remember the time when we last hugged each other?” “Do you know what the topic of the essay of my Chinese final exam was?”

Mrs. Yang, mother of an 8-year-old who studied in his hometown Hunan Province, thought becoming the “deskmate” of her son was a good way to narrow the distance between them.

During the story-reading part, a lecturer shared with children the secrets to successful interpersonal communication and good friendship.

Educator Peng Shan encouraged parents and their children to treat each other as deskmates in their daily lives so that they could work together to solve problems. She also said parents and children should be put on equal terms when it comes to homework tutoring instead of one being superior to another.

Psychologist Li Chunhong told parents to encourage and praise their children more in order to boost children’s self-confidence. Parents were also advised to hug and touch their children for better communication.
