Traveler with cardiac arrest rescued on plane
    2019-02-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A SENIOR woman who collapsed on a flight from Shenzhen to Beijing on Wednesday was saved by a surgeon on the plane who provided first-aid treatment, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported over the weekend.

The woman in her 60s fainted outside a restroom as the plane was en route to Beijing and was seen by Cai Zhiming, a Shenzhen surgeon with 35 years of experience. Cai immediately told the cabin crew to allow the woman, who wasn’t identified, to inhale oxygen while he examined her condition. Cai found that the woman had stopped breathing and her heart had stopped beating, which required immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the report said.

While performing CPR on the woman, Cai learned from the patient’s family members on the plane that the woman suffers from hypertension and accompanying heart problems. Following CPR and taking her medication, the woman’s life was out of danger, as her breathing and heartbeat had returned to normal, the report said.

Cabin crew then contacted staff at the Beijing airport to arrange an ambulance to take the woman to a local hospital after landing.

According to Cai, proper emergency treatment in the first four minutes after the heart stops beating is crucial for the survival of a patient with heart conditions. A patient’s brain and other major organs will be irreversibly damaged after six minutes without proper first aid. First aid includes CPR and artificial respiration.

According to Cai, in the case of a person experiencing heart problems, a rescuer should first call for an ambulance and check if the patient is still breathing and has a heartbeat within 10 seconds. The rescuer should then perform CPR and artificial respiration on the patient until professional medical workers arrive.

Use an AED (automated external defibrillator) if there is one nearby. An AED is more effective than manual CPR, Cai said.
