AIRBUS China Innovation Center (ACIC), the first innovation center set up by Airbus in Asia, was officially inaugurated in Shenzhen on Thursday.

The center will serve to fully leverage local advantages including the innovative talents, partners and innovation ecosystem in Shenzhen to propel the European aerospace giant’s plan to accelerate innovation and shape a future-oriented aviation ecosystem worldwide.

“Innovation has always been a part of Airbus’ DNA and we are focused on specific research development areas that we believe are going to be the key drivers in building the future of flight,” said Luo Gang, CEO of ACIC, at the inauguration ceremony.

ACIC is currently setting up projects in five areas, including hardware lab, cabin experience, connectivity, manufacturing innovation and urban air mobility, according to Airbus.

Tom Enders, CEO of Airbus, said the decision to set up an innovation center in Shenzhen is hugely validated by the innovation potential growing in China, especially in Shenzhen, which is considered to be the Silicon Valley of China.

Benefiting from the innovation climate in Shenzhen, ACIC is looking forward to creating a new pillar in China, according to Enders.

“It is a proud moment for Airbus. China has been heavily investing in new materials and artificial intelligence in recent years. Such efforts are perfectly complementing Airbus’s portfolio,” said Grazia Vittadini, chief technology officer of Airbus.

At the ceremony, Airbus also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on urban air mobility with the Shenzhen Municipal Commerce Bureau, with a vision to fundamentally change the future model of urban transportation.

According to the MoU, the two sides will work closely to explore the development, application and industrialization of urban air traffic in Shenzhen.

Meanwhile, through a wide range of local partners, Airbus aims to further promote urban air transport solutions that meet local transport needs.

On Dec. 10, 2018, ACIC signed an MoU with Royole Corp. to conduct research on the application of flexible electronic technology in aircraft cabins. Apart from the cooperation with Royole, ACIC has also forged strategic partnerships with Huawei and China Mobile concerning the applications of in-flight high-speed networks, Internet of Things and air-to-ground connectivity to improve flight experience.
