Chinese mainland to release ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’
    2019-03-01  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

FRESH off its four Oscar wins, Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” will hit theaters on the Chinese mainland soon, the U.S. company announced on its Chinese social media Weibo on Wednesday.

The Freddie Mercury biopic was approved for a limited release in cinemas under China’s National Alliance of Arthouse Cinemas. It still remains unclear whether the film will run uncensored. The release date has not yet been officially unveiled but on popular Chinese movie-reviewing website, Douban, it is listed as March 22.

Fans rejoiced online at the unexpected chance to catch the film in theaters. “Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?” joked an astonished Weibo user.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” follows British rock band Queen’s lead singer Mercury’s life from when he joins the band in 1970 to their 1985 Live Aid performance at the former Wembley Stadium in London.

Directed by Bryan Singer and Dexter Fletcher, it stars Rami Malek as Mercury, with Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joe Mazzello and Mike Myers in supporting roles. Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor served as creative and musical consultants. They and current Queen vocalist Adam Lambert also made cameo appearances in the movie.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” received numerous accolades, including a leading four awards at the 91st Academy Awards for Best Actor (Malek), Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The film also won Best Motion Picture – Drama at the 76th Golden Globe Awards, and Malek also won the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA awards for Best Actor.

National Alliance of Arthouse Cinemas is an initiative run by the government-supported China Film Archive and a consortium of commercial theater chains. The alliance was formed in 2016 as an effort to cultivate art cinema in China by reserving screens for prestige titles within the country’s scores of multiplexes. The alliance now extends to some 1,200 movie screens — out of China’s 50,000-plus screens total.

Some of the most successful imported titles to release through the system were 2018’s Oscar best picture winner “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and last year’s Cannes Palme D’or winner “Shoplifters,” which earned US$10.3 million and US$14 million, respectively.

According to the alliance’s official WeChat account, there are 26 cinemas in Shenzhen under the alliance, including the Broadway Cinema in Coco Park, UA Cinema in KK Mall, CGV Cinema in Uniwalk and Lumiere Pavilions in Shekou.
