Hospital, UK team to build breast cancer center

THE University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital (HKU-SZH), in partnership with a medical team led by Professor Michael Dixon of the University of Edinburgh, will build a first-class breast cancer diagnosis and treatment center in Shenzhen, according to a project launching ceremony held at the hospital Friday.

This is the sixth medical team introduced by the hospital under the city’s Sanming Project of Medicine following five other teams in the fields of respiratory medicine, orthopedics, clinical tumors, reproductive medicine, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.

According to HKU-SZH, the two sides will spare no effort in clinical services, teaching and training, and scientific research to build a top-notch breast cancer diagnosis and treatment center in the country.

The Edinburgh Breast Unit is the largest breast cancer diagnosis and treatment center in the United Kingdom. Apart from having its own ward, operating rooms and major clinic area, the self-contained unit also has its own radiography department, and diagnoses and treats over 750 cancer patients annually.

Professor Dixon is a fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of both Edinburgh and England and also an honorary fellow of The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. His research focuses on surgical perspectives in neoadjuvant endocrine therapy for large operable and locally advanced breast cancer, particularly aromatase inhibitor treatment.

The breast surgery department at HKU-SZH received 52,000 outpatients in 2018, a nine-fold increase from 5,700 in 2013, according to the hospital. As of last year, more than 500 breast cancer surgeries had been performed at the hospital.

On Nov. 22, 2018, the hospital’s breast surgery department successfully performed the first cryoablation — the destruction of cancer cells through freezing — on the Chinese mainland, providing a new nonsurgical option for the treatment of early-stage breast cancer.
