Woman sick after taking popular health product
    2019-03-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

IN recent years, online commercials have been hyping an enzyme as being effective at detoxifying the body, helping with weight loss, preventing cancer and treating diseases.

A local woman tried enzymatic products and didn’t eat anything else for seven consecutive days. She did lose 20 kilograms but ended up in a hospital, Shenzhen TV reported.

The woman, surnamed Zhang, participated in an activity on body detoxification in Bao’an District on Nov. 26, 2018. The activity was hosted by Guangdong Tiancheng Health Management Co. Ltd.

At the event, the company’s staff explained that their enzymatic products could detoxify the body, improve health and even cure diseases. Zhang spent 1,800 yuan (US$269) on a set of products.

After taking the products for a few days, Zhang found that she could not see clearly, her feces had become abnormal and her stomach was swollen, the report said.

She contacted the company and was told that the symptoms were normal and that she should not eat anything other than the products for seven days. Zhang didn’t feel any better afterwards, so she contacted the company again, and it provided her some Chinese medicine.

At the end of January, Zhang was admitted to the hospital. Her health was much worse than before. Now she has to take anti-depressant drugs to sleep.

The company refunded Zhang 1,800 yuan but has not responded to requests for compensation for her medical expenses.

The company said many customers have taken their enzymatic products and they haven’t seen a case like Zhang’s. The company also insisted that there are no problems with the detoxification method.

Zhang said she will take legal action against the company. (Zhang Yu)
