Work on industry clusters launched
    2019-03-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN has officially launched the construction of the second batch of industry clusters, which focuses on eight strategic emerging industries, according to the Guangzhou-based Nanfang Daily.

In accordance with the city’s 13th Five-Year Plan, industrial development plan, and urban construction and land use plan, Shenzhen has been seriously studying the planning and location of a number of new industry clusters.

The industry clusters are related to such strategic emerging industries as artificial intelligence, third-generation semiconductors, integrated circuits, graphene, marine resources, aerospace, and biology and life health.

According to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development plan unveiled last month, measures should be taken to deepen supply-side structural reform, nurture new industries as well as new business types and models, support the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries, and expedite the development of the advanced manufacturing and modern service industries.

The plan also stresses the need to raise industries’ development levels to advanced international standards, promote the complementarity, coordination and interconnected development of industries, and nurture a number of world-class industry clusters, which points out the direction of Shenzhen’s industrial goals and overall development path.

Supported by the preferential policies, a number of famous local manufacturing enterprises, such as Huawei, BYD, Skyworth, DJI and Royole, have emerged and consolidated the foundation of Shenzhen’s real economy.

Shenzhen will vigorously develop the real economy bolstered by the manufacturing industry, continue to promote industrial investment and technological upgrading, and support the introduction of a number of advanced manufacturing projects with an investment of over 1 billion yuan (US$149 million), according to the city’s industry and information technology bureau.

The Daily also pointed out that an increasingly balanced industrial structure has driven the development of strategic emerging industries in Shenzhen.

For instance, the city is pushing ahead with the basic research and industrialization of graphene. As of last year, Shenzhen had nurtured more than 30 related enterprises and applied for over 900 related patents.

In 2018, the city’s value-added industrial output increased by 9.5 percent to reach 910.95 billion yuan, making Shenzhen the only city in China with value-added industrial output exceeding 900 billion yuan. The value-added industrial output of the advanced manufacturing industry increased by 12 percent. (Zhang Yu)
