53-year-old man wins prize in bodybuilding contest
    2019-03-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A LOCAL programmer won a third prize in the male bodybuilding contest of the 2018 British Empire Games held in Australia, becoming the first Chinese to receive an award at the event, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Yu Jianhua, 53, made a name for himself in bodybuilding circles after winning the award.

Yu came to Shenzhen in 1996 when he was 30. “I’d served in the army for 11 years and I needed a new start,” he said.

He worked at Sobey Co. as a media equipment and system developer. He quit to start his own company with some colleagues a few years later when his former employer was relocated to Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

Not long after he started his company, Yu suffered from depression due to the mounting pressure from work. He left the company as he realized the importance of his health. In 2014, Yu started bodybuilding professionally. He spent two hours working out in the gym every day and gradually overcame the mental illness.

“Working out has nothing to do with age. I want to be a healthy old man,” said Yu. (Wang Jingli)
