THE Shenzhen traffic police have launched a two-month-long Spring Action to tackle violations and reduce fatalities.

In the action, which will run until the end of April, police will focus on violations involving e-bikes, dump trucks, cargo vehicles, pedestrians and nonlocally registered vehicles.

Regarding e-bike violations, police will correct drivers who fail to wear helmets. Parents who carry their children to school without wearing helmets will be warned and punished. Their children’s schools will be notified of the violations.

Police will pilot this practice in designated subdistricts in Nanshan and Bao’an districts to regulate the use of e-bikes. The details of the regulations will be announced later, according to a news conference Monday.

The measures on dump trucks and mixer trucks will be more stringent. Police will analyze the violations of dump trucks and mixer trucks from the past two years and work out a safe driving guidance for heavy-vehicle drivers through cooperation with the dump truck association. Drivers who are rated as high risk will be disqualified from the industry.

The city had reported a total of 269 traffic accidents that resulted in 52 deaths and 143 injuries by Sunday. Although the number of accidents decreased by 66 compared to the same period last year, fatalities increased by five.
