Officials with Shatoujiao Subdistrict Office in Yantian District and local resident representatives strike the bell at the Memorial Bell Pavalion on Zhongying Street on Monday. They struck the bell 18 times to mark the date March 18, 1899, when a treaty was signed between the then Qing Dynasty and Britain under which New Territory in Hong Kong was forcibly leased to Britain. One side of Zhongying Street was governed by Hong Kong and the other was governed by the Chinese mainland. Ding Qinglin |
