Woman sentenced for death of DPRK man

DOAN THI HUONG, a Vietnamese woman, was yesterday sentenced to 3 years and 4 months of imprisonment for the death of a man from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) at a Malaysian airport in 2017 after pleading to a lesser charge filed by the prosecutors.

The prosecutors alternated the charge to “voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means” as instructed by the Attorney-General from the murder charge. The prison term would be counted from Feb. 15, 2017, the date she was arrested. Huong’s counsel Hisyam Teh Poh Teik told reporters that the defense team expected Huong would be released by the first week of May.

Peru bus fire

AT least 20 people were killed Sunday night in a bus fire at an illegal transport terminal in the Peruvian capital Lima, emergency services said.

A number of the victims burned to death, trapped on the upper level of the interprovincial bus in Lima, firefighters said. Much of the vehicle was reduced to a skeleton, and the corpses of some victims could still be seen in the seats. Others asphyxiated on the stairway connecting the upper and lower levels.
