A FUNDRAISING concert titled “Maiden Voyage,” which will be held at Shenzhen Concert Hall on April 25, has raised more than 1.3 million yuan (US$193,452) for families whose children are in ICU, Zhang Huizhen, chairman of the ICU Kids Project told Shenzhen Daily yesterday.

Zhang said schools and charity organizations across the city have shown their support in one way or another.

“Some of the schools are organizing students and teachers to make donations, while others are sending their best performers to support the concert,” she said. “The fundraising event is still ongoing and people can make donations on the Tencent charity platform in exchange for tickets to the concert.”

Zhang said one thing that makes her proud of the concert is that it features more than 300 children and teens studying in Shenzhen, Hong Kong and even abroad. “We have chosen several kids to be the ambassadors for the ICU Kids Project because we want to empower children to help their peers who are battling against disease.”

Victoria Qiu Zhang, one of the ambassadors and the headliner of the concert, told Shenzhen Daily that she will sing 10 or so songs and other children will present solo performances or sing in the chorus.

The 14-year-old Qiu Zhang also brought the good deed back to her school, College Alpin Beau Soleil in Switzerland, to help raise more funds. She initiated an event called “Night Skiing Challenge” on March 16 in which her schoolmates skied in as many loops as they could until tiring out, and their parents sponsored them to do as many as they can by donating 5 Swiss francs (US$4.95) for each loop skied. According to Qiu Zhang, the event raised a total of 1,975 Swiss francs and the school donated another 1,955 Swiss francs.

“My teachers and schoolmates were all very supportive and gave thumbs up to the initiative, for which I’m grateful,” she said.

The ICU Kids Project is part of the Shenzhen Project Care Foundation. According to Zhang, since it was launched this February, it has received over 11,000 donations.

Qiu Zhang said now the preparation for the concert is in full swing and she is looking forward to it as being a new milestone in the ICU Kids Project that will bring hope and love to children in ICU wards in Shenzhen.
