TWO people, including a child, were killed when a wall collapsed in an industrial zone in Xili, Nanshan District, on Saturday.

The wall collapse was caused by torrential rain, according to the official release of the Nanshan government.

The continuous rain over the previous days caused the collapse of the wall in Lefengzhuang Greater Industrial Zone on Tongle Road in Xili Subdistrict, and a simple living place made out of a shipping container was buried in the debris. A man and a child were trapped inside.

The child was pronounced dead at the hospital and the man was confirmed dead after they were taken away from the scene, according to the official release.

The city’s meteorological observatory issued an orange alert for heavy rain at 1 p.m. Saturday, and the city’s flood prevention headquarters initiated a Level IV response requiring related agencies to prevent dangers and ensure the safety of people’s lives and property.

Thunder and heavy rain has forced the Shenzhen airport to cancel 174 flights and postpone 266. A total of 20 flights were forced to land in other cities.

The convection weather that formed a strong whirlwind also sank two fishing ships off of Zhuhai on Friday.

Two people have been rescued while eight others lost contact, according to Zhuhai General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection.

“The strong gale suddenly started and the ship whirled around. My wife and I immediately threw out the life-raft and jumped into it,” Li Gui, a fisherman who was saved, was quoted by Yangcheng Evening News as saying.

In another development, a ship carrying eight people including three Hong Kong people was reported missing. After two days of searching along the coast and around the islands off of Zhuhai, the authorities confirmed the location of the sunken ship.

Rescue work is continuing.

The rainfall will begin to weaken today. The weather will be cloudy with short showers this week, Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory said yesterday.
