Gigs at B10 Live

Ucho Kika

Listening to Chinese duo Ucho Kika is a psychedelic experience akin to staring through a telescope. That’s just how vast and nebulous their music is. No wonder they’ve been selected by KEXP, a well-known music channel based in Seattle, to record a live session as the first Chinese band. Trailblazers Boxuan (on the sitar, which he learnt to play from some of the biggest masters) and Yanlo (synths) plus their musical backup on stage (machines, bass, drums), raise the suspension bridge of sound between the unfathomable traditional Indian raga music with some contemporary electronic beats. It’s simply a giddy bliss. In 2017, Ucho Kika made their worldwide debut show on Transmusicales Festival in Rennes, France. And the journey just started.

Time: 8:30 p.m., April 26

Tickets: 70 yuan

Zhaoze

Even in the worldwide rock field, Chinese band Zhaoze is a one-and-only in its own style. Zhaoze combines the guqin, the most traditional Chinese instrument which has a history of thousands of years, with post-rock, progressive rock, ambient and Western classical, as if it splashes the inks of the moods and feelings of Chinese landscape painting into its blood. Zhaoze builds up an absolutely unique imaginative sound spectrum, providing a soulful, dreamy poetic world. From Asia to Europe and America, in those cities of different cultural backgrounds, from stuffy live houses to outdoor music festivals of huge crowds, Zhaoze has made their fantastic, passionate and impressive performances, and won more and more applause and praise. Christoph Borkowsky, from Berlin, the president of WOMEX, said “Zhaoze is the Chinese Pink Floyd.” The name “Zhaoze” means swamp in Chinese. It’s an analogy of human’s nearby nature, and the home of spirit — our innermost secret. These two are similar in some ways: fixed yet mobile, ruined yet vital. This could be another explanation to Zhaoze’s music.

Time: 8:30 p.m., April 27

Tickets: 130 yuan

Default

Default was formed in Beijing in 2016 and started with playing fuzzy noise in a small basement. Being obsessed with the crack of the fuzz pedal, they fill up hermetic rooms with reverb, drop the lights with shadows and paint their songs with the color of shoegazing. Modified, twisted, and mixed with emotions and imaginations, they picture their dream through their music. The band released their first EP “California Nebula” in 2017 and was signed by Shanghai based SJ-Records. The band will promote their full-length album “Life in a Vacuum” at the Shenzhen gig.
