QIANHAI & Shekou Area of China (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone inaugurated its 5G experience hall at Enterprise Dream Park and launched the trial commercial deployment of its 5G network yesterday, marking the fourth founding anniversary of the area.

It is said to be the first FTA in China to be covered by 5G service.

With a total of 111 5G stations in place, the high-speed, low-delay and extensively connected network will not only provide fast online surfing and loading, but improve the regional network environment for companies in the area.

At the inauguration ceremony, Zhang Haitao, general manager of China Unicom Shenzhen, said the 5G coverage in Qianhai guarantees to create a world-leading communication environment in the area.

The technology will spur the industries of Cloud AR/VR, intelligent logistics, Internet of Vehicles (IoV), Internet-beaming drones and smarter energy, and attract elements of the 5G research and development chain to settle in the area. Tests showed that the 5G peak bandwidth reached 1.5 Gbps and network delay was within milliseconds.

In smart-city construction, the 5G network will enable Internet-beaming drones to send high-definition videos to the platform. The Internet-beaming drones can be widely used in law enforcement, power grid inspection and social safety.

The 5G service will also be helpful to Qianhai in developing smart-city projects, according to Zhang. In IoV, the 5G technology, coupled with AR and AI, will visualize rescue work in traffic accidents and monitor car thefts.

It will revolutionize the transport industry by ushering in the driverless era.

For residents to better understand the 5G technology and its applications, the area administration, in partnership with China Unicom, will organize a 5G exhibition at its Enterprise Dream Park from Friday to Sunday, showcasing applications in different areas, such as driverless transport, smart city, intelligent transportation and manufacturing.

Shenzhen has been chosen by the Ministry of Industry and Information as one of the first-batch cities in China to pilot 5G applications.

In 2019, Shenzhen and Guangzhou will realize commercial deployment of 5G networks, with a total of 10,000 base stations to be built before the end of the year, according to a news conference of the Guangdong Industry and Information Department on Tuesday.
