CHILEAN PRESIDENT PROPOSES TO ESTABLISH STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH SZ

LURED by Shenzhen’s advantages in science, technology, innovation and education, Chilean President Sebastián Pinera proposed to establish a strategic alliance with Shenzhen to speed up the transformations the South American country is going through during his meeting with Shenzhen Party chief Wang Weizhong at Futian Shangri-La yesterday morning.

Pinera explained that Chile is going through major transformations that require the application of intelligence, science and technology.

“Because Shenzhen has become a real power in science, technology, smart city and education, for us, this visit is very important. Among the great transformations that we are undergoing in Chile, for most of them we can learn from what you are doing here in Shenzhen,” said the president.

Pinera cited examples where Shenzhen can help the country. One example is that Chile is working on decarbonizing development so it needs to process toward new and clean energy. The country is also transforming its public transport system, which still uses fossil fuels, into one that uses other energies like electricity.

“We are also working on telecommunications, trying to rapidly incorporate the new 5G technology, because these will open the door to Internet of Things, smart city and many other applications,” said Pinera.

Pinera said they would meet Shenzhen companies later yesterday, including BYD and Huawei. “We are meeting these companies so that they can cooperate and participate in the great transformations that we are going through in Chile.”

He proposed to Wang to establish a strategic alliance between Shenzhen and Chile with special focuses on science, technology, climate change and education.

“Chile has strategic alliances with only two states in this world. One is California, because there is Silicon Valley, and the other is Massachusetts. Both are capitals of science, technology, innovation and knowledge. We want to add a third strategic alliance with Shenzhen because Shenzhen is a developed city in science and technology,” said Pinera.

Through the alliance, the president hopes that both sides can exchange students and knowledge, and Shenzhen companies can play an important role in the transformations in Chile.

Wang said it was the honor of Shenzhen to receive the proposal, which puts Shenzhen at the same height as Silicon Valley and Massachusetts. Shenzhen will work on it and facilitate the establishment of the alliance.

Later Pinera and the Chilean delegation went to Lianhua Hill Park to pay tribute to the late Chinese leader Deng Xiao-ping. There he interacted with Shenzhen citizens and shook hands with them. They also visit the Splendid China • Folk Culture Villages theme park.

Before leaving for South Korea, Pinera visited BYD in Pingshan District.

“We wanted to visit your company because there is a huge coincidence of vision and future projection between BYD and the grand transformations that we are driving in Chile,” said Pinera during his meeting with Wang Chuanfu, chairman and president of BYD.

Pinera invited BYD to join the transformation in transportation in Chile.

“The process has started and will speed up especially in the following months and years. For example, in the following three years, we will change the 5,300 buses in Santiago. This change is to make sure that our vehicles are less polluting, safer and more comfortable,” said Pinera, adding that they have two options: One is electric vehicles, and the other is vehicles that meet the standard of Euro 6.

Apart from electrical vehicles, the president said there are other fields for potential cooperation with BYD including Metro, skyrail and clean energy, because BYD has rich experience with batteries and energy storage.

In December 2018, Pinera unveiled the first 100 electric buses for Santiago’s transit fleet, which were made by BYD.

The Chilean president arrived in Shenzhen by an aircraft of the Chilean Air Force on Saturday, accompanied by the Chilean first lady Cecilia Morel and a delegation. Pinera visited Shenzhen Saturday and yesterday, before leaving for South Korea, the next stop on his tour.

At the invitation of President Xi Jinping, Pinera arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to pay a state visit to China and attended the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

The delegation includes Vice Minister of Telecommunications Pamela Gidi, former Chilean President and current Ambassador on Special Mission to Asia-Pacific Eduardo Frei, president of the Senate Jaime Quintana, vice president of Chamber of Deputies Pepe Auth, representatives of the parliament and a group of entrepreneurs.
