Roads extend north to break bottlenecks
    2019-05-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN is speeding up the construction of the northward extensions of Qiaocheng East Road and Shahe East Road, as well as some tunnel projects, to break the traffic bottleneck between the southern and northern areas of the city.

The northern and southern parts of the city had been geographically separated by Tanglang, Meilin and Wutong mountains. Historically, the city was divided by the second-tier border control line between the four districts within the former special economic zone and the other districts.

With the integration of Longgang, Longhua, Guangming and Bao’an districts with the former special economic zone, the city planned and implemented road and Metro projects to bring the districts closer.

At present, the south-north road projects include Bantian-Yinhu Passage, the northward extensions of Qiaocheng East Road and Shahe East Road, and the renovations of Huanggang Road and Fulong Road.

The Bantian-Yinhu Passage is scheduled to be put into operation at the end of this year, cutting the trip between Bantian in Longgang District and Luohu and Futian districts to 12 minutes. The passage starts at Shangbu Flyover on Nigang Road in Luohu District and ends at Banxuegang Boulevard in Bantian.

The extension projects of Qiaocheng East Road, Shahe East Road and Huanggang Road have completed detailed planning and are inviting bidders. The renovation of Fulong Road is being studied. These projects are expected to be finished by 2030, according to the Shenzhen Municipal Transport Bureau.

Regarding Metro projects, four south-north rail lines, namely lines 6, 10, 13 and 22, which are either under construction or under planning, are expected to relieve the traffic pressure between the south and north areas.

The city is also considering building a road in the northern part of Shenzhen High-tech Park to link with Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway to increase traffic capacity in the area. (Han Ximin)
