Tamsin Waley-Cohen to open music season
    2019-05-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Described by The Guardian as a performer of “fearless intensity,” British violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen will present Beethoven’s “Spring Sonata,” Debussy’s “Violin Sonata in G Minor,” Elgar’s “Violin Sonata in E Minor, Op. 82” and a Heifetz-arranged tune from Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess” on May 23 at Mountain View Theater in Shekou. This is the first concert of Mountain View Theater’s classical music season this year.

Having collaborated with Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic and London Philharmonic, Waley-Cohen has established herself as one of the most insightful and versatile young violinists. She has released a number of critically-praised discs, including a recording of U.S. violin concertos by John Adams and Roy Harris — shortlisted for a Gramophone Award and described in Gramophone Magazine as “outclasses Fulkerson’s pioneering version in every respect. ... Not to be missed.” Waley-Cohen’s constant ambition to explore new artistic goals has led her to build up a wide ranging chamber music network and in 2016, she founded a new string quartet, the Albion Quartet, which has already made its debuts at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris and Aldeburgh Festival. Her interest in contemporary music has led to strong relationships with composers including the late Oliver Knussen — who wrote a new work for violin and piano for her 2016 ECHO tour, — and Huw Watkins, who is her duo partner, and will write a new work for her to be premiered at Wigmore Hall in 2020. Other regular chamber partners include Camille Thomas and Annelien van Wauwe. Waley-Cohen is also artistic director of the Honeymead Festival on Exmoor.

Pianist James Baillieu will accompany Waley-Cohen’s performance. Described by The Daily Telegraph as “in a class of his own,” Baillieu has been the prize-winner of the Wigmore Hall Song Competition, Das Lied International Song Competition, Kathleen Ferrier and Richard Tauber Competitions. He was selected for representation by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) in 2010 and in 2012 received a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and a Geoffrey Parsons Memorial Trust Award. In 2016 he was shortlisted for the Royal Philharmonic Society Outstanding Young Artist Award.
