IN an era of digital economy, all industries are accelerating the process of becoming intelligent while realizing that data infrastructure is the key to the success of an intelligent transformation.

At a roundtable interview Wednesday after Huawei launched its new database management system and world leading high-performance storage system, Wang Tao, executive director of the board and president of ICT Strategy & Marketing, said that the massive amount of data has created unprecedented opportunities and the wide application of artificial intelligence (AI) helps identify the potential value of data and significantly improves the competitiveness of businesses.

“Data infrastructure is the core driver behind an intelligent world and data infrastructure deployment is a must for industries to accelerate intelligent transformation,” said Wang.

Currently, the value of data is still unrealized and less than 2 percent of enterprise data is stored, of which no more than 10 percent is analyzed and utilized, according to Wang. The reason is that single computing architecture cannot process all types of data across all scenarios. Traditional data analytics platforms are not powered by AI, so they don’t support real-time stream processing. Huawei refines data infrastructure in computing, storage and data processing areas.

By combining data and AI, massive amounts of data can be efficiently processed. In autonomous driving, Octopus, facilitated by Huawei Cloud, supports simulation tests across 30,000 virtual scenarios. This helps increase model training efficiency by 80 percent, and shortens the time for development from months to weeks,” said Wang.

In finance, Huawei’s real-time financial risk control solution, powered by big data, in-memory computing and AI, can complete risk control computing on tens of millions of pieces of data within 30 milliseconds. In 2018, this solution helped China Merchants Bank reduce transaction losses by more than US$50 million, and the financial risk rate dropped by 83 percent.

In 2018, Qinghai Province in Northwest China achieved a world record in the use of clean energy, such as hydropower, solar power and wind energy, as power supply for nine consecutive days thanks to a big data center jointly set up by Huawei that could accurately match the power supply with market demand. With the company’s cloud data storage and analysis capabilities, the monitoring equipment for a rainforest program in Costa Rica can process complex audio recordings in real time, and accurately identify noises generated by electric saws and trucks to stop illegal logging.
