HUAWEI VOWS TO CONTINUE SECURITY SUPPORT FOR ANDROID PHONES
    2019-05-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Richard Han

HUAWEI said yesterday it would continue to provide security updates and services for all its existing Huawei and Honor brand smartphones and tablets, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally, after being barred from Google updates to its Android operating system.

The company will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem to provide the best experience for all its users globally, according to a statement released yesterday after Google prevented the company from accessing the latest versions of the Android mobile phone operating system, following the U.S. Government’s attempts to blacklist the Shenzhen-based firm.

In the statement, Huawei said it had made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android, and worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry.

“China will pay attention to the progress of the situation and support Chinese enterprises in defending their legitimate rights through legal methods,” said Lu Kang, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, at a regular press conference yesterday.

In response to German media reports that years of scrutiny by Britain, Germany and the EU have found no obvious “backdoors” in Huawei products, Lu said the results of Europe’s scrutiny on Huawei products have proven the company’s “innocence.” The reports said security loopholes are often spotted in products made by Cisco of the United States, as evidenced by 10 “backdoor” incidents exposed since 2013.

“We’d like to see the U.S. comment on the findings,” Lu said.

“The conclusions have showed the U.S. suppression against other countries’ enterprises with state power is unjustified,” Lu added.    (Related story on P11 )
