Driver arrested for jeopardizing safety
    2019-05-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE arrest of a driver who killed three people and injured six others in a recent fatal accident in Nanshan District was approved by Shenzhen Municipal People’s Procuratorate for dangerous driving that jeopardizes public safety.

In the May 16 accident at the intersection of Nanshan Boulevard and Dengliang Road in Nanshan District, the driver, surnamed Liu, lost control of his Volvo SUV, which rammed into the crowd waiting for the traffic light at the southern safety island.

After plowing into the crowd, the SUV hit two other cars waiting for the traffic light in the opposite direction. Three people were killed, one was seriously injured and five others were slightly injured, according to the police.

A police investigation found Liu had been diagnosed with epilepsy by two local hospitals in December 2018, and police also found prescription medicines in his vehicle at the time of the accident. However, a police test showed Liu hadn’t been driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to a vehicle administration regulation, a motorist should not drive before passing an annual physical examination. Liu ignored the regulation and did not forgo his driver’s license following his diagnosis. He had driven several times this year before the accident.

The police have since revoked Liu’s driver’s license. The investigation found Liu first obtained his driver’s license in the United States in October 2017, while he was studying overseas. He had it transferred to a Chinese driver’s license after returning to Shenzhen in May 2018.

The prosecutors said that Liu had jeopardized public safety by dangerous means, resulting in serious consequences. Liu may face a jail term of more than 10 years. (Liu Jieyu)
