SZ honored for river treatment
    2019-05-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN has been honored by the General Office of the State Council for the evident improvement of water quality in key rivers under environment management projects, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

The Shenzhen Municipal Government has made enormous efforts to boost the water environment and quality since the end of 2015.

Shenzhen invested 70.1 billion yuan (US$10.2 billion) in treating blackened and polluted rivers, built and renovated a total of 19 sewage treatment plants, constructed 5,897 kilometers of sewage pipes, and finished 8,980 projects to clean up sources of domestic water from housing estates between 2016 and 2018, according to the report.

Ye Wenxue, a member of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPPCC, told the Daily that the city has achieved great progress in improving its water environment in recent years.

“This is especially true with Maozhou River. With relevant treatments, the river has been cleared of stinky water,” said Ye, who had submitted several proposals regarding the treatment of Maozhou River since his tenure started in 2010.

Maozhou River has become the city’s role model for water treatment. The volume of ammonium along with nitrogen and the total amount of phosphorus in the river have decreased 50 and 61 percent year on year, respectively.

The surface water at the mouth of Shenzhen River reached the national level IV last December, which is its best level since 1982. The surface waters of Guanlan River and Pingshan River have reached level V, the report said.

In order to complete the work, 956 officers were put in charge of 310 rivers across the city, the government inspected over 30,000 enterprises and 2,650 cases of illegal behaviors were filed for investigation.
