Tree relocation

FUTIAN District Urban Management Administration will hold public hearings on the relocation of trees in the Baishaling, Futian Checkpoint, Jingtian and Meilin areas June 27, where lawmakers, political advisers and members of the general public will be invited to attend, according to the Shenzhen Evening News.

Twelve people, including lawmakers and neighborhood representatives, will participate in each hearing.

The ficus microcarpa and mahogany trees, which were planted in the 1980s, will be relocated because they do not fit into the city’s development.

Those who want to attend the hearing can log onto the Futian District Government website, http://www.szft.gov.cn, to register.

Entrepreneur contest

THE 2019 Nanshan District Entrepreneurship Stars Competition opened sign-ups at http://sticapply.sz.gov.cn recently with a total cash prize of 7 million yuan (US$1.02 million), according to a Shenzhen Economic Daily report.

The competition will start in July and run in several stages until the end of the year, including professional field competitions, overseas competitions and the finals.

Industries upgraded

SHENZHEN was one of the 14 model cities that were honored by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for having successfully upgraded, transformed and implemented technological renovation in 2018, sources from Shenzhen Municipal Industry and Information Technology Bureau said.

Shenzhen is the only city in Guangdong to earn the accolade.

The industrial added value in Shenzhen exceeded 900 billion yuan in 2018, a 9 percent increase from the previous year, contributing 40 percent to the city’s GDP.

In 2018, Shenzhen relieved enterprises of 140 billion yuan in taxes.

Pet smuggling

SHENZHEN Customs busted 77 cases of animal smuggling, involving snakes, lizards, hedgehogs, toxic spiders and coral reefs, between January and April, an increase of 30 percent over the same period last year.

Customs said the alien animals, some of which are endangered species, could carry viruses and bacteria that endanger the local ecosystem and could cause a species invasion in China.

Those who carry animals onto the Chinese mainland need to provide related documents, according to the law.
