Design Society will host a string of events, including two master talks and various educational programs, this week at the Sea World Culture and Arts Center in Shekou.

Talk by Francine Houben

Francine Houben, the founder and creative director of Mecanoo, will reveal her unique humanistic approach to design with the following principles: people, place, purpose and poetry.

Mecanoo is an architectural practice based in the Netherlands with offices in America and Asia. Mecanoo’s iconic designs include the Delft University of Technology Library, the Library of Birmingham and the Longgang Cultural Center in Shenzhen.

Always seeking inspiration in the details of specific locations, Houben bases her work on precise analysis coupled with an intuition built over three decades. She interweaves social, technical, playful and human aspects of space-making together, creating a unique solution to each architectural challenge.

Talk by Henry Steiner

Austrian graphic designer Henry Steiner is recognized as the “father of Hong Kong graphic design.” Having been in Hong Kong for 58 years, he is internationally acclaimed for incorporating Eastern cultural symbols into Western design.

The talk echoes the ongoing “Henry Steiner · Graphic Communicator” exhibition inside the center. The retrospective exhibition, running until June 20, showcases 85 sets of brand designs including from HSBC, Hong Kong Jockey Club, Taikoo Cube Sugar and Hong Kong Hilton; around 90 books and magazines including Yale Literary Magazine; about 60 posters of events, such as Hong Kong International Music Festival and Vienna State Opera, as well as precious design manuscripts.
