Heavy rain

A NEW round of heavy rain is expected to affect the city this week and relieve the scorching heat with rainfall between tomorrow and Saturday.

The hot weather, with maximum temperatures reaching 36.2 degrees Celsius during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday that ended Sunday, forced the observatory to issue a yellow alert. Some 80,000 people visited Dameisha beach park to escape the summer heat.

Academician hopeful

LI QINGQUAN, president of Shenzhen University, has entered the second-round review in his candidacy to be an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, according to a list released by the academy last week.

A total of 222 people were shortlisted out of the 531 first-round candidates in the selection of new candidates for the academy.

The candidates will be publicized between July 1 and 30.

Border crossing

SHENZHEN checkpoints saw 2.72 million people cross the border during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, an increase of 10 percent over the same period last year. A total of 53,100 people passed through customs via the Shenzhen airport, an increase of 30 percent.
