Water pollution treatment pays off
    2019-06-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

POLLUTION treatment on Longyanshan Stream in Shiyan Subdistrict has begun to pay off following a series of clean-up projects, as the stream’s water becomes clear again and the newly planted trees along the riverbank are luxuriantly green, the Bao’an Daily reported.

Located in Shiyan Subdistrict, Bao’an District, Longyanshan Stream is a tributary on the left bank of Shiyan River and originates on Longyan Mountain. The stream runs 1.53 kilometers and its basin area covers 3.13 square kilometers.

According to the results of water quality monitoring released by the city’s environment authority last October, the water quality of Longyanshan Stream was poor, with 1.33 kilometers of black and odorous sections.

Statistics also showed that there were nine sewage outlets along the stream. Prior to pollution treatment, the middle and lower reaches of the stream had been polluted by sewage leaking from urban areas, and the water had gradually turned yellow-brown, black and odorous.

To tackle the problem, the city’s water engineering construction management center and Shiyan Subdistrict Office launched sewage interception projects.

A total of nine sewage outlets were regulated and 250 meters of new sewage interception pipes were installed. No sewage has been found being discharged into the stream since the projects were completed.

Water pollution treatment has also made substantial progress in Xixiang Subdistrict. Xixiang Subdistrict Office recently organized deputies to the Municipal People’s Congress, political advisers and heads of relevant departments to carry out an inspection of the key rivers in the subdistrict.

According to the subdistrict, 90 percent of the repair work on the leaking sewage pipeline network along Xixiang River and Xianshuichong River has been completed. Additionally, Xixiang has basically accomplished the tasks of cleaning up sewage, garbage and silt, and the demolition of illegal structures is making steady progress.
