SHENZHEN is mulling regulating garbage classification to pave the way for fully implementing garbage sorting among residents across the city, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday, citing information from a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Municipal People’s Congress on Tuesday. Household garbage classification is at the top of the agenda of the city government this year. It is not easy to implement garbage classification without related regulations as it involves a change in the lifestyle and years of habits of the local residents, the Daily said. Managing household garbage classification through regulations is an effective method, the report said, adding that it is also a pressing need for the city to tackle the mounting garbage generated every day. Related government departments were required to work out draft regulations that cover every aspect of household garbage classification. Both incentives and punishments were advised to be included in the regulations to encourage wide social participation in garbage classification. The regulations should also formulate reasonable charging standards for garbage disposal. Educational activities on garbage classification were also urged at the meeting to help promote the idea. The draft regulations will be submitted for deliberation at the standing committee meetings before they are rolled out for implementation. (Wang Jingli) |
