Disqualified students TWO students from Fuyuan High School in Bao’an District were disqualified from attending Peking University’s independent admissions exam as it was confirmed their hukou, or household registrations, are in Hebei Province, and hence they are not eligible to sit the 2019 National College Entrance Exam (NCEE) in Guangdong Province. Previous media coverage disclosed that some students with good academic performance had illegally transferred to the Fuyuan school in order to bring fame to the school with exceptional NCEE scores. Phone scam A RESIDENT surnamed Lin in Guangming District was nearly cheated out of 25,000 yuan (US$3,613) by a scammer who pretended to be an officer with the Beijing procuratorate. According to Lin, she received a phone call June 6 from a person claiming to be a prosecutor in Beijing who told her that she was suspected of being involved in a crime. To prove her innocence, Lin needed to transfer money to a designated account. Lin was stopped by a police officer who arrived at her home after receiving a report from Lin’s husband before making the transfer. Alien fish spotted A RECENT online post said that a type of foreign fish named hypostomus plecostomus, also known as scavenger fish, was spotted in Xiangmi Lake in Futian District. This type of fish, originally from the Amazon River in Latin America, is an invasive species with serious impact on the ecology of local waters. The local government said on its Weibo that the foreign fish in Xiangmi Lake had not influenced local species yet, but warned residents not to release the fish into rivers. |
