A VOLUNTEER service station, focusing on Rh-negative (Rh-) blood donors, was officially set up at Huaqiangbei Blood Donation Center in Futian District on Wednesday, according to Thursday’s Shenzhen Special Zone Daily. As the Rh- blood type is rare in China, Zhang Li, a teacher at Nantou High School, founded the Shenzhen Rare Blood Donor Association, the first Rh- service team in China, in 2015. The association now boasts a total of 3,000 Rh- blood donors in Shenzhen. “A, B, O and AB blood types are common. Rh+ blood and Rh- blood are part of another blood type system called Rhesus blood type system. Only 0.34 percent of the Chinese population has Rh- blood,” said Cai Debo, a team director. During the Dragon Boat Festival, three people with Rh- blood donated blood at the blood center to secure the safety of a pregnant woman during delivery. Kuai Yingfei, one of the three donors, said he was happy to be able to help the new mother although he didn’t know her. “We are like a moving blood bank,” said one of the donors, Chang Yuliang. “We are ready 24/7 inside and outside of Shenzhen.” Members of the Shenzhen Rare Blood Donor Association will gather at the service station every Wednesday to promote blood donation.
