Man sentenced to death

A BEIJING court Thursday sentenced a man to death for killing one and injuring 14 in a shopping mall in downtown Beijing last year.

Beijing No.2 Intermediate People’s Court handed down the death penalty to Zhu Jiye, who was also deprived of political rights for life.

Zhu attacked people at the Joy City mall in the commercial area of Xidan, Xicheng District at around 1 p.m. Feb. 11 last year, resulting in casualties, the court said in a verdict.

Car rams into kids

A CAR plowed into a group of 17 nursery school children in western Japan, injuring two of them, local media reported Thursday.

According to local police reports, the children were struck by the vehicle as they were walking along a sidewalk in Nishinomiya City on their way to a park close to their school, in Hyogo Prefecture, on Thursday morning.

The police said that following the incident, two girls had to be rushed to the hospital due to their injuries, with one of them, aged six, sustaining a fractured shoulder, while the other had unspecified injuries.

A 69-year-old female driver was arrested at the scene, located in a commercial district of Nishinomiya about 600 meters from a Hankyu Railway station, on suspicion of negligent driving resulting in injuries.
