Smart blood donation station opens

THE city’s first smart blood donation station on the street was opened in Luohu District on Friday, marking the 16th World Blood Donor Day. It is the second smart blood donation station in the city and was built by Shenzhen Blood Center.

Located in the vicinity of the Shenzhen Book City Luohu store, the station embraces technologies like Internet of Things (IoT) and fashion elements, and blends in perfectly with the surrounding environment.

Passers-by can interact with the robot at the entrance of the blood donation station when they walk past. When donors give blood, the nurses don’t need to record the blood type by hand and only need to use needles to collect blood, which gives them more time to communicate with the donors.

In terms of smart management, the blood center said they can monitor the number of donors inside the station and the pedestrian volume outside the station at any time on their mobile phones.

According to the center, 500 blood donors are needed every day in order to meet the needs of clinical blood use in Shenzhen. At present, the amount of donated blood and the amount of blood used is in balance in the city.

Shenzhen took the lead in carrying out voluntary unpaid blood donation in China 26 years ago, and the city’s many firsts in voluntary blood donation took place in Luohu District.

On May 8, 1993, Shenzhen branch of Red Cross Society of China and Shenzhen Blood Center launched the first publicity activity for voluntary blood donation at the Workers’ Cultural Palace Square in Dongmen in Luohu, and received the city’s first unpaid blood donor, Zhong Zhenji.

In 1995, the first blood donation vehicle in China entered Dongmen, starting the trend of accepting blood donations on the street.

Under the coordination of Luohu District Government, the city’s first fixed blood donation station was built on Guiyuan Road in June 1999. The station stopped operation in 2016 due to the shrinking pedestrian volume over the years.

In 2018, in order to keep this historic blood donation station, Shenzhen Blood Center and Guiyuan Subdistrict Office requested that a fixed blood donation station be established near Shenzhen Book City Luohu store to replace the one on Guiyuan Road, which was quickly approved.
