Boy hit by falling window passes away
    2019-06-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A 5-YEAR-OLD boy who was hit by a window that fell from a high-rise building in Futian District on Thursday morning passed away at Shenzhen Children’s Hospital at around 5 a.m. yesterday, according to the hospital.

The boy, identified as Zhuang, was knocked to the ground by the falling window as he was walking past a housing estate in Huaqiangnan with his mother. Zhuang was first sent to Shenzhen Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital and later transferred to Shenzhen Children’s Hospital to undergo surgeries the same day.

He suffered from a severe head injury, thigh-bone fracture, lung problems and 12 other critical medical conditions upon death, according to the children’s hospital. Zhuang’s body was transferred from the hospital’s ICU to a local funeral home yesterday morning.

At the hospital, Zhuang’s mother exhibited extreme grief over her son’s death and even experienced breathing problems, according to the Southern Metropolis Daily. Zhuang’s uncle told the Daily that the mother had hoped that her son would live past this year’s Father’s Day, which was yesterday.

The Futian District Housing and Construction Bureau has dispatched an inspection group to investigate the housing estate where the accident occurred, according to the Shenzhen Evening News.

The group asked the housing estate’s property management company, Shenzhen Shangcheng Estate Management Co. Ltd., to inspect all of the windows and air conditioners.

According to the company’s manager, surnamed Liu, the property management company had sent over 30 workers to examine the apartments in the housing estate in the estate.

“During the inspection, we did find some problems, such as loose screws in the windows,” Liu was quoted as saying. “We fixed what we could on site and put on file other problems that do not pose immediate danger. We will deal with those problems after we complete the inspection of all the apartments.”

Liu noted that the workers inspected around 300 apartments Saturday alone and they will finish the inspection as soon as possible.

After the accident, many homeowners in the housing estate began to install steel cables to prevent their windows from falling. According to a homeowner, many homeowners who rented out their apartments have started to pay more attention to the safety of their properties.
